A “Light” Challenge, It’s Not

March 1, 2010

2010 Gasparilla Distance Classic Bud Light Challenge
Bib Number: 875
Overall Placement: 70/195 (36%)
Age Group Placement: 6/16 (37.5%)
Gender Placement: 25/101 (24.8%)
Chip Time: 3:51:25

My challenge this weekend: to run a 15k starting at 7:05am Saturday, then a 5k at 9:30, then rest up and run a half marathon at 6am Sunday.

I’m so thankful I did this! As you may remember, I decided to run the Challenge to avoid the long runs required to run the marathon, which was my original plan. Though training for back-to-back-to-back races was tough, it didn’t require the kind of distance running a 26.2 would have.

When I got back to hotel after running the marathon at Gasparilla last year, I saw someone in the elevator who was wearing a Challenge medal. It tweaked my interest, and I knew then that this was something I’d like to try someday. When my knees told me a marathon was not in the cards this spring, I immediately knew this was my year to try the Challenge instead.

I’m happy with my time, which for the Challenge is recorded as cumulative. I had calculated 1:30 for the 15k, 30 minutes for the 5k, and 2 hours for the half marathon, which would have brought me in at 4 hours. And I came in a little short of that–and I’m still disputing the time they recorded me at in the half marathon.

I’ll write about each race individually later, but for now let me just say I did it! Thanks for the support and encouragement along the way.
